This kapkap is an ornament known as a tema worn on the chest or head of village leaders in Oceanic countries and is used as a status symbol, in dance ceremonies, and for trade. It is made of tridacna shell and decorated with a stylized frigate bird made from tortoise shell. This design has also been interpreted as an ancestor depicted with spine and ribs.
As shown, this pendant comes with the metal stand for display. The kapkap itself is 4 inches high and 3.5 inches across.
